At Omni Dental, root canal treatments are nothing to be scared of. In the past, dental patients around the world have shuttered at the mere mention of a root canal procedure. However, with modern day technology, outstanding dental practice standards and the advanced training required of all dentists, root canals are a common, low-risk treatment that have many long term benefits that cannot be replicated by other dental services.

When our Carter Lake dentists or Council Bluffs dental professionals recommend a root canal procedure, keep in mind that the final objective is to get rid of the infected pulp from the center of the tooth. To achieve this, our dentists inherently needs to get inside of your tooth. So, this isn’t a cleaning, but this also isn’t a highly invasive surgery. Although it may not be a cakewalk, it’s also not a marathon! The steps of root canal treatment are as follows:

Anesthesia: The first step in a root canal treatment is to administer the anesthesia. Your Omni root canal dentist will make sure that your tooth is completely numb prior to beginning any treatment. This step ensures your comfort throughout the entire procedure. You should only ever experience minor pressure on your tooth. If you experience anything other than pressure or tension, tell your dentist immediately.

Elimination of infected tooth structure: Step two of the root canal procedure is to remove the decaying exterior of your tooth, if any. This exterior portion may appear as a big cavity or an abscess. Much like a filling treatment, a dental drill is used to eliminate the decayed parts of your tooth.

Pulpal debridement: After all infected tooth structure has been removed, your dentist will remove the infected pulp from the interior of the tooth. This is completed with long files that are inserted into the root of your tooth. At this time, we will also put anti-bacterial medications into the root of the tooth to aid in the recovery and disinfection process.

Fill the root: After the root has been completely cleaned internally, your Omni Dental dentist will fill the root with a thermoplastic filling product. This is a rubber-like material most commonly known as “gutta-percha”. It is heated and compressed to fill the now empty canal.

Restoration of the tooth: Finally, a final restoration procedure will be conducted on the tooth. This finally remediation step may be in the form of a filling or a crown. The type of restoration depends upon the quantity of tooth that is remaining after the root canal treatment has been completed. Your Omni dentist will speak to you about the different choices for a final restoration of your tooth. It is important to the Omni Dental team that you are happy with your given options and can agree upon a strategic restoration treatment.

Throughout the treatment, several digital X-rays may be taken to make sure that the entire tooth root canal is being cleaned and that all the infected pulp is removed. Some root canal procedures require more than one visit. However, he will explain the tentative timeline and procedure length with you during your initial consultation.

Our Midwest dental practice wants to remind you that root canal treatments are only recommended when less invasive options are unavailable. With that said, it’s crucial that you listen to this recommendation as an untreated infection can spread rapidly and impact your teeth, your skin and even your bones.
